Montrose: Discover History, Wildlife & Beaches on the Angus Coast

Often bypassed between Dundee and Aberdeen, Montrose is one of those places that rewards you the moment you slow down. Situated along the Angus coast, it blends a handsome historic centre with golden sands, a world-famous wildlife reserve, and sweeping coastal views — making it ideal for a day trip or a longer stay.

Montrose — A Town Steeped in Story

Montrose grew up around its sheltered harbour, becoming a thriving trading port where ships sailed across Europe. That prosperity still shines in the wide, elegant High Street, lined with buildings that speak of centuries of commerce. Montrose Museum takes you deeper — tracing the area’s people, industries, and natural heritage through fascinating collections.

Literature lovers will find links to Robert Burns, who visited several times. Follow the Robert Burns Trail to see places that inspired him and hear stories of his time here. Every lane and corner feels layered with history — so take your time strolling before heading toward the shore.

Montrose Beach — Miles of Golden Sand

Few things match the simple joy of the fabulous beach. Stretching roughly three miles from town to the River North Esk, it offers vast open sands, a promenade, and easy access — perfect for families, quiet walks, or simply breathing in the sea air.

Every season brings its own charm: summer picnics and bright blue horizons; autumn winds and crashing waves; winter skies that feel wild and alive. Try the circular walk along the shore and past the North Water Viaduct — it gives you a wonderful sense of the wider landscape beyond the beach. Younger visitors will love Seafront Splash, with outdoor play areas right beside the sea.

Montrose Basin — A Wildlife Wonder

The town’s true gem is Montrose Basin, a vast tidal estuary of the River South Esk and a site of international importance for nature. Mudflats, saltmarsh, and reedbeds create a haven for thousands of birds — kingfishers, waders, swans, and ducks are just the start.

Run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre is the perfect starting point. Autumn and winter bring something unforgettable — huge flocks of pink‑footed geese arriving at dusk and dawn, turning the sky alive with movement. There are viewing hides and walking trails throughout — a paradise for photographers, birdwatchers, and anyone who loves the outdoors.

Scurdie Ness — Lighthouse & Coast

Head south of the river to Scurdie Ness, where a gentle walk leads to the lighthouse that has guided ships safely since 1870. The path treats you to sweeping views across Montrose Bay, and the shoreline here is rich in geology — keep an eye out for colourful stones and semi‑precious pebbles. Watch the water too: seals and dolphins are regular visitors. On a clear day, the panorama feels endless.

Montrose Air Station Museum — Aviation Heritage

Montrose also holds a special place in flight history. Montrose Air Station Museum stands on the site of Britain’s first operational military air station, established in 1913. Exhibits tell the stories of pilots, aircraft, and the local community’s role in shaping aviation — deeply moving and fascinating in equal measure.

Beyond the Town — Explore Further

This corner of Angus is packed with things to see nearby:

  • House of Dun — a magnificent Georgian mansion set in beautiful grounds
  • Lunan Bay — stunning sands, dunes, and the evocative ruins of Red Castle
  • St Cyrus National Nature Reserve — dramatic cliffs, wildflowers, and abundant wildlife

All are within easy reach, making Montrose a brilliant base from which to explore.

Why Montrose Deserves Your Time

History, nature, beach, and heritage — everything here sits close together, creating a day out that feels full but never rushed. Wander the High Street, walk the shore, watch geese lift from the basin, and end with the sun setting over the bay.

It’s easy to drive past, but Montrose is far more than a stop on the way somewhere else. Come and see for yourself — you may just find it becomes one of your favourite places along Scotland’s east coast.
